Forty Years of the BMW M3

For four decades, the BMW M3 has continued to evolve, pushing the boundaries of performance with each generation. Across six generations, BMW has explored a diverse range of engineering philosophies—from four- and six-cylinder engines to the mighty V8, before returning to the legendary twin-turbocharged inline-six found in the F8X and G8X generations.

While the technology, powertrains and approach to performance have changed dramatically, the underlying philosophy has remained consistent: genuine motorsport influence, true driver engagement and a level of capability that allows the M3 to perform equally at home on the street or the track.

More importantly, the M3 has always provided an exceptional foundation for further development. Its combination of engineering, dynamics and performance has made it a platform that enthusiasts can continue to refine and enhance.

The MODE Journey

For MODE, that journey began with the E92 M3. What started as a series of builds evolved into more than a decade of development focused on understanding the M3 platform—its chassis, dynamics, limitations and potential.

From the E9X through the F8X and now into our current G8X projects, each generation has contributed to the knowledge and experience behind what we do today. Our latest G8X programs have also expanded into motorsport, further developing our understanding of the platform under the most demanding conditions.

That experience has shaped our products, our engineering approach and ultimately the way we build and develop BMW performance platforms. Each generation of M3 has brought something different, and each has played a part in defining the direction of MODE.

Where It Began

The story began in September of 1986 with the E30. Born from motorsport and developed with competition at its core, it established the benchmark that every M3 since has been measured against.

The E36 broadened the formula with greater refinement and the introduction of the straight six, while the E46 became one of the most celebrated generations of all time. Its naturally aspirated S54, chassis balance and driver connection secured its place as a reference point for BMW M enthusiasts.

The V8 Era

The E9x generation marked one of the biggest departures in M3 history. BMW replaced the straight six with the naturally aspirated S65 V8, creating a completely different character built around high revs, response and sound.

It remains the only V8 powered production M3 and one of the most distinctive chapters in the model’s history. It is also a particularly important platform for MODE, with our original E92 'Project M3' and following E9x builds forming an early part of our own development with BMW M cars.

A New Generation of Performance

The F80 changed the formula again. Turbocharging brought a major increase in torque and performance potential, while the chassis and supporting technology moved the M3 firmly into the modern era.

For enthusiasts and tuners, it also opened new possibilities. Power became easier to unlock, but the importance of cooling, braking, suspension and tyre setup became even more apparent as performance increased.

Today, the G80 takes that capability further again. With the S58, advanced chassis systems and the availability of M xDrive, it is the most complete and technically capable M3 yet, while still giving owners enormous scope to personalise and develop the platform.

Six Generations, One Identity

The significance of the M3 is not tied to one engine or one generation. The E30 represents where the story began. The E46 is remembered for balance and precision. The E9x for its V8. The F80 for the arrival of turbocharging, and the G80 for taking the platform into another level of performance and technology.

Each generation has carried something forward while creating an identity of its own. Different engines, different technologies and different eras, but one unmistakable lineage.

At the Core of MODE

That progression is what has kept the M3 at the centre of MODE. Each platform requires a different approach to power, cooling, braking, suspension, wheels and overall vehicle balance, and that constant change has shaped how we develop and recommend products.

Our focus has always been on understanding the complete car rather than treating individual modifications in isolation. Whether the goal is road use, track use or something between the two, the M3 continues to reward considered development.

The Story Continues

The technology will continue to change, just as it has across every generation before it, but the significance of the M3 has always come from its ability to evolve while remaining recognisable to the people who care about it most.

For now, the anniversary belongs to the six generations that brought the M3 to this point, but the story is not finished. As BMW M prepares for what comes next, forty years of history provides the foundation for another generation to build on.
